The Japan Times dated June 2 ran Wide Angle, a movie review, in which Shoji Kaori writes an article, with a title: Dad-made bento hit the silver screen.
Now papaben, or bento made by papas, are trending, writes Shoji. In fact, there are a lot of recipes out there, geared specifically for Japanese dads who have taken the plunge into the world of bento crafting.
And now there's a movie about it: "Papa no Obento wa Sekai-ichi," (or "Papa Makes the World's No. 1 Bento." Directed by Fukatsu Masakazu, the film stars 50-year-old Wanatabe Toshimi, who plays the role of a single salaryman father, making bento for his teenaged daughter.
The movie has a limited one-week release at a cinema, but is now crowdfunding for a national release.
