Ono no Imoko

Japan's first diplomat was a man named Ono no Imoko. In 607, Shotoku Taishi decided t send Imoko to visit Emperor Young of Sui in old China.

At that time, traveling by boat across the sea was very dangerous. It took Imoko and his people three months to arrive in Sui.

Then, Imoko met Emperor Yong and gave him the message from Japanese Empress Seiko. The emperor became angry to read it. Yong thought Japan was weaker than his country.

After retiring to Japan, Imoko reported that the letter from the Chinese emperor had been stolen. Some people believe that he hid the letter because it was humiliating to read the contents.

Imo was not only a brave man but also a quick thinker. That's how he got Japan and China to help each other.
